Mr Amer Durrani, Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon.
Mr Durrani is a Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon with a special interest in the management of skin cancer. He is the Plastic Surgery Lead for Skin Cancer based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, and set up the sentinel lymph node biopsy programme for malignant melanoma as a regional service in 2009. He is involved in a number of ongoing skin cancer research projects.
Management of Advanced Skin Cancer
Melanoma & squamous cell carcinoma both have a small risk of spreading elsewhere in the body, usually to the lymph glands that drain the area of skin where the primary tumour was originally removed from.
Mr Durrani will arrange for a CT scan to assess if the lymph glands can be removed, together with a biopsy of one of the lymph glands to confirm that the tumour is the cause of the lymph gland enlargement. These lymph glands can be removed in an operation under a general anaesthetic. This may be followed by further treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

…Following a referral from my GP, it turned out to be a melanoma on my face. In spite of my age (92), Mr Durrani’s skill and attention has given me great hope for the future. I’m so grateful.
